My mom was given bisphosphonates for 11 years with improving density test results and positively no side effects, that is until she developed a small sore on the inside of her mouth that did not heal. The sore manifested into a sharp object that protruded the site, so she had to go to the dentist. The dentist extracted a quarter inch chunk of bone and said that in 25 yrs. of dentistry he had never seen anything like it. My mom had her own teeth and had no teeth removed. She quickly quit taking fosamax in 2006.

Serious bisphosphonate side effects might include jaw necrosis although some serious Fosamax side effects can sometimes display themselves in a severe nature, the most serious Fosamax side effect is the development of a bone disease known as osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ), or dead jaw.

ONJ is a type of bone disease that is usually associated with large joivnts like the hips, knees, ankles or shoulders. The onset of ONJ is linked with the temporary or sometimes permanent loss of blood to bone tissue, which leads to death of the tissue and the inevitable collapse of the bone. There are an estimated 10,000 to 20,000 new diagnosis of osteonecrosis diagnosed each year in the United States, most of which occur as a result of some type of bone injury like a fracture or dislocation.

I saw my dentist yesterday for the incisor that is dissolving and he said he is hesitant to treat me due to the potential for osteonecrosis of the jaw from Fosamax. I was surprised. I only taken two doses. I made a decision to read the complete lengthy information sheet that comes with my medicine - sounds like something I should have done first. But the letters are so small that even with totally normal eye sight after cataract surgery this past fall, I still needed a magnifying glass to get thru it, with intense and difficult concentration.
